Food @ Downham Hall

We offer a range of food options at Downham Hall, adapted recently following reopening after the lockdown for the Pandemic. We have a newly installed and excellent kitchen team and adapted our offerings to both the new team’s talents and the best approaches in the new normal.

Our head chef is not one for the limelight but has great experience in a 2 Michelin star kitchen and a range of other environments with which his experience is taking our food forwards.

We are cooking all meals on site and using as many local ingredients as possible, even starting to grow a small amount ourselves.

The Orangery is the perfect place for a great start to the day. With its glass roof and panoramic views, the Orangery easily has the best views at the Hall.

Served for non-residents Tuesday-Sunday from 8am until 10am, our breakfast menu offers a selection of home-made cereals, fresh bread, eggs laid by our own chickens, sausage and bacon from a local butcher and a range of jams and marmalades. We also offer other well-known branded jams and condiments to suit every taste.

While our Full English breakfast often takes centre stage, for those wishing to fuel up for a busy day, our continental breakfast is not to be sneezed at. With homemade granola, fresh fruit salads, cheeses, hams, fruit juices and a selection of yoghurts, there is something for everyone on our menu.

We also offer filtered Columbian coffee and a wide range of teas, brewed to perfection in traditional tea-pots. Please ask us about our selection of teas.

Our coffee shop serves a wide selection of locally soured hot and cold lunches all year round from Tuesday-Sunday.

In the summer, cool yourself down with a chilled drink served with ice, while enjoying the summer breeze coming in through the French doors. Or why not have lunch outside on our garden terrace while taking in the spectacular scenery? On wintery days, admire the beautiful misty fields from the warmth of the Orangery, while warming your fingers around a traditional pot of English breakfast or fruit tea. The perfect pit-stop after an invigorating walk in the countryside.

Our coffee shop serves a selection of delicious sandwiches, light bites and home-made. We can also cater for special dietary requirements. If you do have any dietary requests, please let us know ahead of your visit where possible, to allow us to source fresh produce. For a full list of our lunches, please contact us.

Afternoon tea

Our afternoon teas are prepared with a quality in mind to match the lovely surroundings. Our new chef team are able to create wonderfully looking and tasty cakes and savoury options are to die for.

Following lockdown and the requirement for changes to our operations, we are now serving Afternoon Tea, Thursday-Sunday at £30 per person. We need 48 hours notice mostly, do call if you are looking for sooner though, as we cook everything on site and like things to be fresh.

Vouchers are also available as gifts.

Pizza from the barn

Our latest offering is based around Pizzas cooked in our wood fired pizza oven served al fresco (as long as the weather allows) from our barn on a seating area to the front of the house.

The Pizza is getting rave reviews and we are starting to supplement it with other dishes like salads. A wide range of drinks available and strict social distancing of over 2 metres and outside makes it very relaxed.

For more details please view here:

Sunday lunch

Our monthly Sunday menu always includes a roast option but other options too. It is a small but delicious set menu for either 2 or 3 course. Served across our indoor spaces and if you wish in our garden of the North Wing.

Please see more details, include a sample menu here:

Private Dining

With our new chef team and our spaces being created for dining we are now able to offer some private dining options. These packages are specifically planned with a menu agreed and numbers and wines to follow.

Please email us on for more details.

coming to visit post lockdown

a few changes but still here to serve

With the relaxation of lockdown on the 4th July we have been allowed to reopen. However we have to make some changes to keep everyone safe. The main change is to capture the details of every guest who visits.

Please complete this form, once for each diner visiting:

We have also adapted to use a small part of our barn to allow pizzas to be cooked from our new pizza oven. This means more dining outside and enables us to open in the evening. More details here:

Here are some measures we are taking to reduce the risk from speading the virus:

– Extra cleaning of all shared surfaces
– Using our outside spaces and marquee more than normal
– Removing shared table dressings
– 2 metre distancing mostly (we have space luckily)
– Fans and windows open to assist ventilation
– Diner registration to assist track and trace

The current format for our food, spelt out by our revised opening times:

– Breakfast: Weds-Fri 7.30-10.30, Sat-Sun 8-10.30
– Pizza from the barn: Weds-Fri 5-9pm
– Brunch : Weds-Sat 11.30-2.30
– Afternoon Tea: Thurs-Sat 11.30-2.30
– Sunday Lunch: Sunday 12-4
